The Torres Strait Islands, located in the Torres Strait to the north of the Australian mainland, are threatened by rising sea levels caused by climate change.
Nance Haxton of ABC News spoke to Joseph Elu, the Chairman of the Torres Strait Regional Authority, who explained that the foreshore communities are already starting to be inundated by the rising sea levels. While the TSRA is working in conjunction with the state and federal governments to rebuild sea walls on some of the inhabited islands, Mr Elu is clear that a comprehensive long-term plan is required to secure the future of the Torres Strait Islands communities.
